Our tips for a summer without surprises for your mobile

Roaming

Summer is here again, and with it comes a holiday for many of us. If your travel destination is abroad, these tips will help you avoid a huge mobile bill when you return.

What is roaming?

Roaming covers all mobile communications that you make on a foreign network. This includes calls, SMS, MMS and mobile internet made abroad, which will incur an extra charge. The reception of SMS is not subject to roaming and will not be charged.

However, if you call or send messages from Luxembourg to other countries, these are international communications, not roaming calls. Calls and text messages made from Luxembourg to the EU are included in your Orange offer.

Find out about roaming charges

When planning your trip, visit your mobile operator's website to check the roaming prices for your destination.

If you have a company phone, there are business plans that are automatically blocked after a certain amount is spent so that you don't get a huge bill. If you are a professional, you can contact your account manager or service manager to find out all about roaming and choose the package or options that will meet your needs.

Think about a roaming option

After checking the roaming prices that apply in your holiday destination, depending on the use of your phone abroad, it may be a good idea to subscribe to an option for the duration of your trip.

You can count on Roaming Passes from €9, they will adapt to your needs and prevent you from exceeding your package abroad by adding units or GB of data to your package.

Anticipate by uploading your multimedia content

Music, films and TV series are daily uses of our data. So to liven up your journeys or your evenings this summer, think about downloading this content before you leave. This way, you can enjoy this content during your holidays without using your data, which will greatly reduce your consumption and the risk of exceeding your package.

Turn off your mobile data on the move

If you follow the above advice, there is no need to activate mobile data when travelling. It is important to think about this tip because when you travel, especially before you cross the borders of countries that are not included in your subscription, you will be charged a high amount for each MB used in a territory not included in your mobile. Each MB used in a territory not included in your mobile will be charged a high amount, and the bill can quickly increase without you realising it.

This advice will also be useful if you are taking a boat on your trip or holiday. While at sea, your phone will connect to a satellite network to access the internet and mobile data from this type of network incurs significant charges.

To make sure your phone doesn't download data abroad, you can disable data roaming directly in the phone settings.

Wi-Fi is your best friend

When you have Wi-Fi available nearby, consider connecting to it. At highway rest areas, airports, restaurants or tourism venues, checking for Wi-Fi should become a reflex before you try to connect to the internet.

In fact, remember to register the Wi-Fi network of your place of stay as soon as you arrive. Your smartphone will automatically connect to it when you get there.

Remember to switch off your Wi-Fi assistant

You may not know it, but for the past few years, all smartphones have had a Wi-Fi assistant. This assistant allows your phone to connect to the most reliable Wi-Fi network it can find. To do this, your phone uses mobile data to search, which can cause your data usage to skyrocket without you even noticing. To avoid a hefty bill, simply disable your Wi-Fi assistant before you travel.

Turn off your voice mail

Outside Europe, messages left on your voicemail are considered an incoming call, and every message you listen to is considered an outgoing call. To avoid this, remember to cancel call forwarding to your voicemail by typing ##002# via your phone application and press the call key. You can also disable your voicemail via your phone settings. If you are unsure, you can always ask one of our advisors in Orange shop.

Good news for European travellers

At Orange, roaming charges are included in the packages for consumption in countries within the European Union. This means that you can travel in Europe using your mobile package for calls, SMS or surfing in 4G or 5G without any extra cost. In addition, 5G is available while travelling in the following countries: Belgium, Croatia, France, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Netherlands, Italy and Slovenia.

The SMS, calls and data used are therefore deducted from your usual monthly package. Be careful not to exceed this amount, as you may be exposed to overage charges, as in Luxembourg.

If you want to go on holiday with peace of mind, the BeUnlimited package allows you to make unlimited calls, send SMS and surf in Luxembourg, but also in Europe and the United States, without any commitment.

With these tips, you are definitely ready to go on holiday.
