Every day, an increasing number of podcasts are being created. These audio broadcasts on the net, to be streamed or downloaded, are a like an on demand radio: you listen to your favourite content, where and when you want. How do you find the best shows, which podcasts are a must? Grab your headphones and here are our top tips for listening.

Why are podcasts so successful?

The term 'podcast' was first introduced in 2004 and is a contraction of Apple's digital music player, the iPod, and broadcast. Despite its relatively early appearance, the popularity of podcasts is fairly recent. The main reason for this success is the possibility of listening to recent talk shows, wherever and whenever you want, even during other activities.

In short, podcasts allow multitasking, which is very much in demand in our current lifestyles. Whether you want to keep yourself busy while running, relax while cooking, break away from traffic, or even educate yourself in the shower, you can now listen to your favourite podcast. No matter when or where you are, your podcast is within earshot.

Globally, there are over 850,000 podcasts available, with over 30 million shows and episodes to keep your curiosity alive in politics, food, comedy, news, creative crafts, business, history, entrepreneurship, horror, and more. There's something for everyone, whether you're looking for a little education or a change of scenery.

Step one: choose your podcast app.

You can listen to your podcasts on your favourite device: phone, tablet or computer. The only thing you need to take into account is having a reliable and stable internet connection. If you want to enjoy your favourite podcast while on the move, make sure you have a subscription with the right amount of mobile data. BeUnlimited allows you to listen to your podcasts with no limits in Luxembourg, and even allows you to enjoy up to 25GB in Europe.

Once the connection is set up, all you need is an App to listen to your podcasts. If you are on an iPhone, Apple Podcasts is installed by default. On the Android side, there are many apps to choose from, both free and subscription-based. You can also find some on iPhone if you want a different app.

  • Google Podcasts, similar to Apple Podcasts. Fans of clean, crisp designs with few buttons and notification sounds will be delighted. Download it for free on Android and iPhone.

  • Spotify is popular for listening to music, but it also offers many interesting podcasts. Available for free on Google Play or the App Store.

  • Deezer is similar to Spotify, but offers superior audio quality, appreciated by sound purists. Get the app for free on Android and iPhone.

  • Pocket Casts the free app that calls itself "the world's most powerful podcasting platform". Get it on iPhone and Android.

  • Stitcher works like Spotify or Deezer, the app is free, but interrupts your listening with ads. You can remove these ads for €2.5 per month to enjoy your favourite podcasts ad-free. Find it on the App Store or Google Play.

  • Podcast Addict is the most popular application on Android. In addition to listening to your favourite podcasts, you can find audiobooks and radio stations for your listening pleasure. Download for free on Google Play.

Enter the world of podcasts, by streaming, downloading, or by subscription.

Now that you've found and installed your favourite app, you can follow and listen to your podcasts in 2 ways:

  • By subscribing to the podcasts you are interested in, you will receive a notification when a new episode is available on your smartphone, computer, or tablet.

  • Through the web page of the podcast you are interested in, where you can also download the different episodes and benefit from offline listening, useful!

Good to know, the longer the podcasts are, the heavier they are to download. You may want to download new episodes only via the Wi-Fi network to save your mobile data.
