Orange Luxembourg obtains the 5G frequencies needed to meet the challenges of future networks

Press Release
Press Release

Luxembourg, July 24th 2020

The auction for the allocation of 5G frequencies conducted by the Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (I.L.R) ended this week. Orange obtained the maximum number of frequencies available for the 5th generation of mobile communication: 2x10 on the 700 MHz band, 1x110 on the 3.6 GHz band.

Complementary to 4G, 5G represents the latest evolution of mobile networks and is one of the major technological breakthroughs of the next decade. It will bring many improvements in speed, latency, reliability, scalability, flexibility, security, coverage and capacity. Thanks to its performance, 5G will support the digital transformation of most economic sectors (health, transport, industrial production, etc.) and will be a lever for competitiveness for companies and a lever for attractiveness for Luxembourg.

Jeannot Grethen, Head of Legal & Business Development - Orange Luxembourg

"5G is designed to be a multi-service network. It is the network best able to support the evolution of uses and the development of new services. Without it, we will see congestion on the 4G network."

A 5G network to respond to the increase in uses that require high capacities.

Convinced of the potential of 5G, Orange Luxembourg has been actively and responsibly preparing for the arrival of 5G for several months. The auctions conducted recently by the Institut Luxembourgeois de Régulation (I.L.R) were therefore an important issue for the operator. The result is very positive.

Corinne Lozé, CEO - Orange Luxembourg

"We are particularly happy with the result of the auction. We obtained 110 MHz in the 3.6 GHz band, which is the maximum, and this will enable us to provide our customers with the highest capacity to use or imagine the services of tomorrow. Network quality and customer experience are the pillars of a sustainable evolution and will remain our priority. Orange Luxembourg, with the support of the Orange Group, is definitely ready for 5G!"

Jeannot Grethen, Head of Legal & Business Development - Orange Luxembourg

"5G will allow us to offer dedicated and tailored connectivity, adapted to the specific needs of new innovative applications based on virtual and augmented reality, real-time automation, the internet of things, autonomous vehicles, remote medical assistance, etc."

5G deployment will be gradual

The first smartphones are already available. The rollout will be gradual. Initially, 5G will make it possible to cope with the rise in global traffic in addition to existing networks and to continue to offer everyone an optimal connection.

Corinne Lozé, CEO - Orange Luxembourg

"5G will progressively offer improved mobile broadband up to 10 times faster than 4G as well as high performance fixed internet access to complement the fiber network where it is not available. With 5G, we confirm our commitment to offer the best fixed and mobile connectivity to our customers and to support start-ups and companies in their innovation projects."
