Orange Luxembourg launches eSIM on the Luxembourg market

Press Release
Press Release

Luxembourg, March 6th 2020

Orange Luxembourg will support integrated SIMs (eSIMs): a first in the Luxembourg market that will offer completely new customer experiences, prepare Orange Luxembourg's processes for the future in the telecommunications market and make the company a fully digital operator.

The operator Orange Luxembourg will now offer the integrated SIM, the eSIM, the new technology to replace traditional plastic SIM cards. The eSIM is a small chip that is directly integrated into the device. Once activated, it works like a traditional SIM card.

New uses and customer experiences

Support for eSIM opens the door to entirely new customer experiences.

Corinne Lozé, CEO - Orange Luxembourg

"With eSIM, we are becoming a fully digital operator. We are opening the door to new, even simpler and more digital uses. For example, users will be able to easily add a new eSIM profile and juggle between private and business subscriptions."

The eSIM will make life easier for frequent travellers, expats and tourists: they will be able to easily opt for a local subscription when staying in Luxembourg.

The support of eSIM will also allow Orange Luxembourg to offer new subscription services for a wide range of devices, such as tablets, connected watches and other wearables, in the near future.

From 30 March, all Orange residential customers with a compatible smartphone will no longer have to insert a SIM card into their device to access the Orange Luxembourg network. A real revolution is underway.

Reduction of plastic waste and logistics

The launch of eSIM support gives Orange Luxembourg an opportunity to prove its commitment as a responsible and committed operator.

Jean-Christophe Bayet, Chief IT & Network - Orange Luxembourg

"eSIM will offer environmental benefits by reducing the use of plastic and streamlining logistics processes. We are once again demonstrating our position as a bold challenger and our commitment to the environment."

The company expects eSIM to take a larger market share than the conventional SIM card in the Luxembourg market by 2025 and to occupy almost 100% of the market by 2030, with new ranges of compatible devices emerging. According to a recent projection by Counterpoint Research, shipments of eSIM-based devices will reach nearly two billion units worldwide by 2025. Most device manufacturers are already banking on embedded SIMs as the removal of the drawer required for traditional SIM cards frees up space for other components.
