Orange Luxembourg adds Eco Rating to its e-shop and shops
February 20th, 2024 - 12pm
Following on from its "RE" programme, Orange is continuing its drive to promote more responsible production and consumption practices. The operator now mentions a new environmental performance indicator for smartphones listed on its e-shop and in its shops: the Eco Rating. This label, based on 5 criteria, is designed to support and guide customers towards more responsible consumption choices, taking into account the environmental impact of devices.
Bertrange, 20 February 2024 - Since 2022, Orange Luxembourg has been running its "RE" programme, inviting customers to return their old phones to shops to give them a second life or to recover the rare and precious materials they contain and recycle them. To continue the momentum of this programme, the operator is now including a new environmental performance indicator in the specifications of the smartphones listed on its e-shop and in its shops. It's called Eco Rating.
A score out of 100 assigned to each smartphone, based on 5 areas
Jointly created by Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica, Telia Company, Vodafone and Orange, the Eco Rating aims to provide consistent and transparent information on the environmental impact of smartphones throughout their entire life cycle: from production to transport, use and end of life. Smartphones are assessed on the basis of 5 performance areas: durability, repairability, recyclability, climate-friendliness and resource conservation. The average of these 5 criteria then gives a score of between 0 and 100 (100 being the best possible score).
This new eco-label takes the following parameters into account: the lifespan of the appliance, ease of repair, the use of rare raw materials such as gold, the possibility of dismantling components easily so that they can be recycled, and the CO2 emissions generated.
Around ten smartphones from the Orange Luxembourg catalogue are already involved
Several brands, including Xiaomi, Samsung and Huawei, are currently taking part in the Eco Rating project. As well as supporting customers, the aim of the Eco Rating is also to encourage manufacturers to reduce the environmental impact of their mobile phones," explains Claire Ledoux, Marketing Director at Orange Luxembourg.
Today, several of the phones we list already have a rating. These include the Xiaomi 13T, the Honor 90 and the Oppo Find X5 Lite. These scores are clearly displayed on the presentation labels of the smartphones in our shops and on the product pages of our website. The longer-term aim is to ensure that as many of our products as possible are included, in the interests of transparency.
Alongside the launch of the Eco Rating, Orange Luxembourg is also promoting the circular economy with the sale of reconditioned mobiles and eco-design with its Livebox, which is made from recycled materials and is energy-efficient.
