What if we turned to more responsible electronic equipment?
September 27th, 2023 - 11am
The environmental impact of our electronic equipment is not negligible. Firstly, because their design requires scarce resources, and secondly because they consume energy throughout all their life cycle (manufacture and use).
But should we deprive ourselves of these tools? Of course not. But as a future user, you are entitled to have all the information you need to choose your new equipment.
Eco-rating: the nutri-score for smartphones
Perhaps you've heard of the nutri-score for food products? Eco-rating is more or less the same thing. This label is a standardized way of comparing the performance and environmental characteristics of our smartphones.
Created by 5 European operators, including Orange, this label gives each smartphone tested an overall score out of 100. The higher the score, the better the smartphone's environmental credentials. To obtain this overall score, 5 indicators are assessed:
Durability
Reparability
Recyclability
Respect for the climate
Preservation of resources.
The eco-rating was launched in June 2023 by Orange Luxembourg for certain smartphones in the e-shop, including the Xiaomi 12 and the Samsung S22, in the "health and environment" section, alongside the SAR score.
Refurbished smartphones: the economic and ecological alternative to new ones
If your smartphone is nearing the end of its useful life, or if you're looking for a new device, why not try a refurbished one? Much cheaper than a new smartphone, it has the same features and often the same lifespan. As well as saving money, choosing a refurbished smartphone also means dividing the carbon footprint of your purchase by 11, reducing waste by 88% and saving thousands of liters of water.
To meet this demand and make it easier to buy quality refurbished equipment, Orange has been offering two refurbished iPhone since early summer 2023: iPhone 12 and iPhone SE.
With Orange's RE program, you can even bring in your old phone to have it recycled, doubling your good deed for the environment. Orange's RE programme, you can even bring in your old phone to have it recycled, doubling your good deed for the environment.
That's a few good reasons to take the plunge, don't you think?
What is eco-design?
Eco-design is the desire to design products with a limited environmental impact while maintaining a high level of performance. This means that the entire life cycle of a product is considered, from the design phase until it becomes waste.
What does this mean in practical terms? There are many possibilities, including reducing the weight of a product, optimising its design to make it more compact, or using recycled materials. The Livebox is a perfect example of an eco-design approach. Made from a 100% recycled casing and remotely controllable via an app, it activates a standby mode to optimise energy consumption, while benefiting from Wi-Fi 6 and the speed of Orange Fiber.
