Orange Luxembourg launches its "Re" program

Lancement RE
Press Release

Luxembourg, February 7th 2022

Through its new "Re" program, Orange Luxembourg intends to strengthen its commitment and its initiatives, which have been underway for several years now, to raise public awareness of the environmental impact of mobile phones. Thanks to Orange Luxembourg, more than 6,000 devices have already been recycled or refurbished in Luxembourg in recent years. And it's not over yet!

Every year, more than 1.5 billion mobile phones are manufactured worldwide. However, only 1 to 2% of this volume is recycled worldwide. In Luxembourg, for example, less than 10% of mobile phones have a second life! This means that there are tens or even hundreds of thousands of phones sitting in the drawers of Luxemburgers.

Yet each smartphone contains certain rare and precious materials, such as gold, silver, cobalt, lithium or tungsten. Recycling smartphones is therefore a major challenge for the protection of our planet.

More than 6,000 phones collected

Since 2015, the Orange Group has been committed to embedding the concept of the circular economy within its organisations. Thanks to this initiative, more than 6,000 mobile phones have been collected in Orange Luxembourg shops! At the Orange Group level, more than 15 million devices have been collected over the last ten years.

What is the "Re" program?

In order to strengthen its commitment and the initiatives taken in recent years, Orange Luxembourg launched its new "Re" program on Monday 31 January. It aims to raise public awareness of the environmental impact of mobile phones and to strengthen its mobile phone collection initiative.

Barbara Fangille, Head of Communication - Orange Luxembourg

"Through this initiative, the Orange Group aims to further its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of the mobile phone market."

Orange Luxembourg's new "Re" program is based on 4 pillars:

  • Trade-in: within the 11 shops spread across the country, Orange Luxembourg collects mobile phones that are no longer in use.

Mustapha Rahem, Consumer Market & Online Sales Manager - Orange Luxembourg

"In addition, based on the condition and brand of the phone, we give out a voucher worth up to 700 euros. Whatever the phone, we offer a minimum of 2 euros. Through this solidarity collection, we offer a second life to the mobile phones and allow the contributors to get a nice discount on the purchase of a latest-generation phone."

  • Refurbishment: in parallel to its offer of new phones, Orange has been offering a range of refurbished phones for sale for several years.

Barbara Fangille, Head of Communication - Orange Luxembourg

"Giving a mobile phone a second life is not only a gesture for the planet but also an opportunity to buy a brand new smartphone at a lower cost."

Mustapha Rahem, Consumer Market & Online Sales Manager - Orange Luxembourg

"The trade-in, recycling, and refurbishment processes are entrusted to our partner CompaRecycle, a company that has been working for years to preserve our planet's resources through the recycling and refurbishment of electronic products."

The devices are reconditioned in a short circuit, (i.e. in Belgium, France, or Luxembourg) before being reintroduced to the refurbished devices market. In the Orange Luxembourg shops, all refurbished devices come with a 24-month warranty.

  • Recycling: old mobile phones that are no longer functional are recycled in order to preserve the natural resources needed to manufacture a phone. This principle combines the protection of the planet and the social and solidarity economy.

  • Repair: offering a local service is one of Orange Luxembourg's priorities. This is why the operator also has a mobile phone repair service with a Luxembourgish partner. Broken screens, connection problems, batteries to be replaced, etc.: Orange advisors are available to help you. Orange advisors are available from Monday to Saturday to meet their customers' needs.
