How do I format my smartphone?

Whether it's to free up space on your phone, reinitialize software or erase your data before selling your phone (Insert RE link), formatting your phone may be necessary. Here's how, in just a few steps, you can do it yourself.

Before formatting

As a precaution, we recommend that you always back up your data. For e-mails, contacts, photos and downloaded applications, make sure you make a backup on your cloud service.
For Androids with a microSD card, it's important to remove it to perform a reset.

Formatting an Android smartphone

  • Back up your data.
  • Go to your Settings.
  • Click on System.
  • Go to Recovery Options.
  • Press Erase all data.
  • A confirmation message will appear on your screen. Click on Reset Phone.
  • Let the phone run until a configuration menu appears, just as it did when it first started up.

Formatting an iOS smartphone

Apple offers several reset options (settings, network, location etc...), here we focus on how to erase the iPhone.

  • Back up your data.
  • Go to Settings then General.
  • Select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  • Confirm with Reset or Erase content and settings.
