Orange 5G: roll-out of 5G

Frequencies

The implementation of 5G is underpinned by a set of technical solutions that will be rolled out progressively.

In future, 5G mobile antennas will use several frequency bands.

Antenna

The required huge MIMO (multi-user Multiple Input Multiple Output) antennas feature several channels or connections that can be used to send and receive greater volumes of data simultaneously.

These intelligent antennas consisting of lots of miniaturised antennas allow speeds and a transmission capacity that are currently beyond the reach of 4G.

The huge MIMO antenna acts as a directional beacon. The signal is directed in a precise direction rather than being emitted in all directions. Consequently, the huge MIMO antenna limits loss of energy by emitting radio waves only where these are useful.

It allows the radio signal to be directed to users and devices when necessary instead of continuous emission in all directions. This considerably reduces, or even eliminates, superfluous waves around users.

Incidentally: 5G – waves and health

There are over 3,500 scientific publications (studies, reports, reviews, etc.) studying all radio frequencies around the world, with the majority focusing on mobile phones.

The leading international health authorities (WHO: World Health Organization) and the EU Scientific Committee, as well as relevant national authorities (Germany, France, United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Nordic countries, etc.) are reaching the same conclusion: there is no scientific proof of a proven health risk where exposure to radio waves is below the thresholds recommended by the WHO.

These limits are reassessed frequently by the above health authorities.

The waves used by 5G are the same as those for television, radio and existing mobile phones.

The WHO exposure limits have been adopted in most countries and apply to all radio wave services. Respecting these limits protects the population.

The exposure limits for 5G are 39 Volts per metre (V/m) at 700 MHz equivalent to those of 4G and 61 V/m at 3500 MHz equivalent to those of Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G.

In Luxembourg, the exposure limits have been set at 3V/m.
