How 5G will improve gaming?
Are you a fan of video games or smartphone games? The arrival of 5G in Luxembourg should considerably improve your entertainment experience! Joe Hoffmann, President of the Luxembourg Esports Federation (LESF), explains what the impact of the deployment of 5G for gaming will be.
Whether you are a fan or casual player of League of Legends, FIFA, Clash Royale, Minecraft, Candy Crush or Angry birds, you have probably faced a connection that's too slow or too limited to enjoy an optimal gameplay experience. With 5G, these problems will be solved!
A revolutionised gaming experience
5G is expected to transform mobile gaming, the way we play games on our smartphones or tablets, using not a high-speed Internet connection but a mobile network such as 4G or 5G. "At home, frequent gamers often opt for a LAN (Local Area Network) connected to Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable in order to enjoy the best conditions. If you have a fibre Internet connection at home, the arrival of 5G will not make much difference when you play. But when you're on the move, or if you don't have a broadband connection in your home, 5G will make a big difference", explains Joe Hoffmann, President of the Luxembourg Esports Federation (LESF).
This new generation of network allows you to browse the mobile Internet at a speed 10 times higher than that offered by 4G. The latency time, i.e. the delay between the moment a key is pressed and, for example, the resulting character action, is drastically reduced. What's more, the 5G makes it possible to connect many more devices simultaneously. "As a result, when you play with a mobile connection, streaming will be faster, in-game action and interaction will be much smoother, and more gamers will be able to connect at the same time, without affecting the quality of the game", says Hoffmann.
Playing everywhere, all the time
5G will also enable cloud gaming to take off. What is it?" It's playing a game that is operated from a remote platform in the cloud on a powerful server, not on a PC or console", says Hoffmann. Until now, mobile networks have not been efficient, responsive or fast enough to handle the large amounts of data required for gaming and provide a seamless gaming experience. 5G will be able to do this.
With cloud gaming, there is no need to download, install or update the game on a computer or console, it is now possible to play directly via your smartphone or tablet.
It will also be possible to play anywhere, anytime, as long as you have Internet access and a 5G mobile package. You can therefore imagine starting a game in the evening at home, on your computer, and continuing it the next day, during lunchtime, at the office, from your smartphone, and this with the impression of playing locally thanks to the power of the 5G network.
New games possible
5G, because it allows more data to be used and offers a much faster throughput, will also make it possible to design other, more innovative game formats. “ Developers will have far fewer limitations, says Joe Hoffmann. For example, we can imagine, in the future, more immersive games, integrating augmented reality or virtual reality.”
For gaming and esport fans, 5G will improve the streaming of video games on platforms such as Twitch and offer an even more enjoyable show experience thanks to high download speeds, preventing possible delays in the action.
So who is looking forward to 5G to discover the future of gaming?
