Benefits of 5G
Hi new reality.
Hi 5G.
5G provide the required speed and data capacity to support the development of new generations of apps, services and new commercial opportunities. Emerging new technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), are accessible to everyone in mobile formats.
Virtual reality
Virtual reality (VR) already provides connected and immersive experiences that were previously impossible. 5G take VR into a new dimension: you are now able to travel without moving, watch a match and feel as if you are right there in the stadium, visit an apartment from your sofa, or even relive the best moments of your holiday and imagine you were actually there again...
Augmented reality
Augmented reality (AR) is already enhancing reality by superimposing additional information. 5G further increases its scope: following entertainment with video games, culture, education, medicine and industry are now new focuses for developments.
New formats
4K, 8K, HDR (High Dynamic Range), 360°. This brings benefits for anyone who uses video streaming on smartphones or connected TVs. And people who record and broadcast live videos, whether private individuals or professionals, now enjoy the greater speed and capacity provided by 5G.
4K : a digital image format with a definition greater than or equal to 4,096 pixels wide. 4K is called Ultra High Definition Television (UHD TV).
8K : a digital image format with a definition of 7,680 pixels wide.
HDR : a technology that makes it possible to display different levels of brightness in a still or animated image.
Hi speed.
Hi 5G.
Speed and responsiveness are 2 features that support the emergence of new applications. The most striking of which is the autonomous car. A driverless car requires a network capable of identifying any obstacle on the road almost in real time. The autonomous car is therefore supported by the extreme responsiveness of the 5G network which achieves response times of around a millisecond. On the other hand, speed doesn’t have any major impact on this application.
In future, with billions of simultaneously connected objects and new applications, 5G will allow the development of intelligent cities and schools, GPS trackers for objects and animals, home automation, intelligent and more reliable vehicles. It will also improve healthcare and education.
5G will help companies improve the performance of their procedures thanks to intelligent data processing. Companies will operate and take key decisions based on data. This will pave the way for innovations in agriculture with intelligent farms and production optimisations bringing about cost savings, an improved customer experience and long-term growth.
5G: many benefits for individuals and companies
5G: True or false?
The deployment of 5G is generating numerous reactions from the general public.
While some are aware of the benefits of this technology on our daily lives, others are more reticent and still have many questions, particularly about its usefulness or its impact on the environment and health. But what is it really? To help you see things more clearly, Orange has examined these preconceived ideas.
"We don't need it, 4G is enough"
FALSE.
The 4G network will soon no longer be able to support our daily data exchanges. Our daily consumption of data to watch videos, listen to music, or watch movies is indeed increasing. According to the Luxembourg Regulatory Institute (ILR), mobile traffic has grown spectacularly between 2017 and 2019 in the Grand Duchy (+45%). And this exponential increase is expected to continue in the coming years. In addition, the health crisis, with the generalisation of teleworking, has further reinforced this dependence on the network and digital tools.
5G will enable everyone to enjoy optimal, more reliable connectivity!
"Its environmental impact is high".
FALSE.
The 5G network is more energy efficient than the previous generation for the same data consumption. It is even estimated that by 2025, this energy efficiency will be 10 times greater than what 4G offers today. In other words, what used to take hours will now take minutes with 5G. From an environmental point of view, this improved energy efficiency will make it possible to compensate for the necessary renewal of our smartphones, which, for the most part, do not support 5G.
In addition, the development of 5G should lead to the emergence of new services and new uses and thus contribute to providing solutions to environmental issues.
"5G is useless!"
FALSE.
5G is a lever for innovation in many sectors. Whether in education, health, logistics, entertainment or industry, the 5th generation mobile network will help make all their services more efficient. A better efficiency of these different sectors that will allow the consumer to be the big winner of this transformation!
"5G is dangerous for health"
FALSE.
These accusations are contrary to the state of scientific knowledge on the biological effects of radio frequencies, as the World Health Organisation points out. Firstly, it should be remembered that the frequency bands used by 5G, around 3.5 GHz, are close to those currently used for 4G or Wi-Fi. These waves, which have been the subject of thousands of studies, do not have enough energy to attack our cells or our DNA, unlike X-rays or ultraviolet rays.
However, this energy can cause water molecules to vibrate, resulting in heating of exposed areas of the body when certain thresholds are exceeded. For this reason, standards exist and these exposure limits are constantly monitored. In addition, as a preventive measure, the country's operators promise to scrupulously apply the emission criteria established by the Luxembourg authorities.
"5G will help spread my personal data further"
FALSE.
Firstly, let's recall that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires any digital service provider to be transparent about the use it makes of its users' data. Secondly, 5G has natively more robust security requirements than previous generations. Indeed, 5G will include in its protocol the possibility of implementing end-to-end encryption, a communication system where only the people communicating with each other are able to read the messages they send to each other. This technology will make hackers' interceptions more difficult.
